Aston Martin’s whimsically named Q division has been hard at work in recent months, toiling away on a windshield-free expression of historic track car and modern-day frisson-generator. The company calls the new concept car the DBR22, and it echoes the million-dollar, 88-example Speedster that the company revealed in 2020.
Like the Speedster, the DBR22 is also a means of linking Aston’s present and halcyon past, deepening its brand narrative profoundly and making a caboodle on the connection. The concept’s referent is mainly the Le Mans-winning DBR1; like the concept as a whole, the newly designed carbon fiber grille and side vents riff on the classical but strike out in their own direction. Its build links hand-made with technological firepower: the rear subframe is 3D printed.
The DBR22 is another V12-packing model as well, and its 5.2L twin-turbo gas-burner can take it from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, and to a top speed of 198 MPH; it is paired with an eight-speed paddle-shift transmission. The car features coach-built carbon fiber body panels, twin nacelles, unique 21-inch 14-spoke alloy wheels, and a diffuser, two tailpipes and new full-width light bar in back. The cabin is dressed to the nines, with a leather dash and a wealth of exposed carbon fiber—seats, console, and trim—as well as the requisite digital display and touchscreen.
Aston is bringing the DBR22 concept to Monterey Car Week this month, so if you’re in the area, stop by to have a look. The company will also be showing off its DBX707 SUV and its latest work on the Valhalla.
