This 1910s A&C Tudor in Pasadena is back for another crack at the open market this summer. The current owner, Chinese construction tycoon Huang Kangjing, has relisted the property at the same ask: $14.896 million. If public records are on the money, Kangjing has owned the nine-bedroom estate since 2012.
The Robert Philip Flint House, as it is known, was completed in 1915. It sits on a healthy 3.52 acres; this property is as well-known, or better-known, for its gardens as it is for its house. Lawns, walking paths, a stone well house (which has been in service as a native spring water source since the property was built, and perhaps before), a greenhouse, a carriage house and a koi pond are arranged romantically around the residence, and the landscaping culminates in an elevated standalone patio surrounded by a mix of succulent and flowering plantings and other flora. Nearer to the house, a covered attached patio overlooks a courtyard with a fire pit and swimming pool, and a brick fireplace and BBQ is joined by an outdoor dining space.
The home’s interiors are divided into family and entertaining-oriented floors, with the former designed in an unpretentious and occasionally whimsical style. The use of pea green in the latter is striking; in the dining room, it covers the walls, while in the living room it is used to accent the tongue-and-groove planks of the ceiling, while the beams are left in a raw or lightly-finished wood grain. Leaded glass, original narrow plank oak, fireplaces, and pattern wall covering and floor tile also contribute to this extraordinary example of Pasadena history.
Huang’s net worth is reportedly north of $1 billion.
