How AI Is Driving Improved Understanding In Pet Healthcare

As pet ownership continues to rise in the post-Covid era, awareness about pet health is increasing, showing just how important it is to take care of them. Humans and animals are tightly connected, so it’s no wonder that in the age of “Information Overload,” pet parents have more information than ever and can often struggle to interpret it correctly.

The Googling Phenomenon: Misinformation Vs. Knowledge

Today, veterinarians face challenges regarding “Dr. Google” consultations. Who among us has ever searched on Google for a possible diagnosis regarding some strange symptom, only to find every possible explanation—from the simplest to the rarest disease? This can happen to pet parents as well.

There’s nothing wrong with what you find; what’s wrong is the interpretation. Veterinarians work hard to become DVMs, and they’ve been taught to interpret symptoms and get to the proper diagnosis. This is not something we can do, not because we’re not capable of it, but because we just have not studied it!

The risk of misinformation can create an increased state of anxiety and in some cases a lack of trust in professional vets. So the real challenge for veterinarians is debunking myths while maintaining trust.

Leveraging Information Properly: Improving Veterinary Workflows And Pet Wellness

A survey by Global Pets shows that 40% of veterinarians are adopting AI tools to gain a competitive edge. According to the survey, “Imaging, radiology, record keeping and administrative tasks were the most common applications and areas vets had used AI tools (39% each), followed by voice-to-text transcription (36.9%) and diagnosis and disease detection (34.1%).” I see several applications within the clinical workflow that can leverage AI:

• Instrumentation and AI image analysis.

• AI copilot in diagnosis and disease detection.

• Voice to text and transcription.

Thus, AI can improve the veterinary workflow and optimize the usage of information at a professional level.

The same can be imagined in the case of pet owners, adopting AI chatbots vs. search engines: providing reliable, vet-approved insights. In this way, owners can become more educated, less anxious and a trustworthy partnership can be created between vets and pet parents.

The Future: AI And The Evolution Of Pet Healthcare

The integration of AI in pet healthcare is transforming how veterinarians diagnose, treat and manage animal health. One of the most promising advancements is AI-driven personalized pet health plans, which analyze vast amounts of data (e.g., breed, age, lifestyle), providing tailored recommendations for nutrition, preventive care and early disease detection. It’s a paradigm shift, moving from a reactive approach to a proactive one.

Thinking beyond diagnostics, AI may change the vet-owner relationship as well, offering real-time insights and improved communication. AI platforms enable pet owners to pre-screen symptoms before a clinic visit, reducing unnecessary appointments while prioritizing urgent cases. This not only enhances veterinary efficiency but also strengthens trust and engagement between vets and pet parents.

However, as AI becomes more integrated into pet healthcare, it’s crucial to balance technology with veterinary expertise and pet parent education. AI should act as a support tool, enhancing rather than replacing the critical role of veterinarians. By combining AI, veterinarian judgment and pet owner education on responsible AI use, we can create an ecosystem where technology empowers better decisions.

Proper Education Can Address AI Anxieties

Several surveys highlight a general apprehension toward AI and its impact on society. A Gartner report showed that 87% of respondents are worried about the possibility of being replaced by AI. A U.K. Authority survey reported: “Meanwhile, there is a perception of the risks from the technology, with 45% saying they fear it could take away people’s jobs, 35% that it will lead to a loss of human creativity and problem solving skills, and 34% that humans will lose control of AI.”

Also, the abundance of data from AI-powered pet wearables may also overwhelm owners, causing confusion rather than clarity. This data overload may lead to increased anxiety, as owners struggle to interpret the information and make informed decisions about their pets’ health.

To leverage this technology and get the best results, there is a need for collaboration between AI developers, vets and pet owners. A lot lies in proper education about AI, its pros and cons, as well as its capabilities and limitations. Through collaboration, everyone from vets to pet parents can start embracing AI for better pet health outcomes: getting rid of Dr. Google, anxiety and moving toward a more educated and conscious way to treat pets and their diseases and needs.
