New Initiative Seeks To Bring Solar Energy To Lower-Income Households

The Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC), Illinois’ second largest public housing authority, has collaborated with the community solar provider Solstice on an initiative to bring solar energy options to low- to moderate-income households across the 108 communities within HACC’s jurisdiction.

As part of this endeavor, Solstice will provide bilingual community solar education and enrollment events to residents, enabling them to access clean, renewable energy at reduced costs. Solstice stated that community solar farms enable low- to moderate-income households to access solar power without having to own a home or report their credit score. HACC and Solstice have set a goal of enrolling a minimum of 150 residents in the community solar program.

“Today marks a significant step towards a cleaner and more equitable Cook County,” said Toni Preckwinkle, president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. “The collaboration between Solstice and The Housing Authority of Cook County to expand renewable energy access is a testament to the positive change that can be achieved when organizations come together with a shared mission. By providing affordable solar energy options to low- to moderate-income households, we are not only reducing energy burdens but also contributing to a more sustainable future.”
