Nestled in Silicon Valley, California, is America’s happiest city, according to WalletHub’s 2025 rankings. Fremont, Calif., a suburb of San Jose, topped the list because its residents have high rates of emotional and physical well-being, and life satisfaction, in addition to higher incomes than the national average.
But beyond the metrics, here’s what makes Fremont America’s happiest city.
According to the U.S. Climate Data, Fremont’s average temperatures are the coldest in December and January—hitting an average of just 50 degrees. The rest of the year, residents of Fremont enjoy temperatures in the 60s and 70s, with just 16.7 inches of rain per year, while the U.S. as a whole averages about 30 inches.
There’s no shortage of sunshine in Fremont either: The city averages 264 sunny days per year, compared to the national average of 205.
Sunlight exposure is known to support mental and physical health, as it boosts vitamin D levels, helps regulate cortisol levels, and encourages physical activity.
Living in Fremont also makes it easy to connect to nature. According to the city’s website, Fremont has 1,224 acres of parks and access to 73 parks with over 1,250 miles of trails.
Additionally, the city is home to a robust network of bike paths that make it easy to get around without a car.
Fremont isn’t only the happiest city in America—it was also ranked WalletHub’s No. 1 city to raise a family in 2024. One of the biggest reasons for that is its premier public school district, which received a grade-A score on Niche, a website that provides in-depth profiles on neighborhoods and schools.
The U.S. Census data for Fremont also reflects a racially and ethnically diverse population. The city reports that 49% of Fremont’s residents are born outside of the U.S., while 62.9% speak a language other than English at home.
Innovation and opportunity come naturally to Fremont, which boasts over 900 advanced manufacturing companies and more than 1,200 tech and life science firms. Tech giants like Seagate Technology, Tesla, and Meta all have offices in Fremont.
The city’s website also reports a median income of $162,336—double the 2023 U.S. median household income of $80,610—which was one of the reasons it earned its happiest city title and the top spot to raise a family. Having the fourth-lowest share of families living in poverty—its poverty rate is 5.4%—as well as the third-lowest share receiving food stamps, according to WalletHub, reflects a higher quality of life for residents, especially those with children.
According to WalletHub’s analysis, Fremont has the fifth-lowest depression rate and and the lowest number of adults who report having 14 or more mentally unhealthy days per month.
Another metric that reflects good well-being is Fremont’s low divorce and separation rate—the lowest in the country, in fact, at only 8.9%.
